Barriers to Community Energy- consultation open until 30th June
Government support for community energy has gradually reduced in England over the last decade, resulting in the high level of public interest in community energy leading to a very limited number of new projects. In a September 2021 YouGov survey of 1600 UK households, 53% of residents said they were likely to join an energy co-operative if one was set up in their area. This rose to 78% of respondees would be encouraged to take part in a local energy co-operative if locally generated renewable electricity could reduce household energy bills. We believe the potential of the community energy sector needs to be realised. A useful first step will be for all Wessex Community Energy Network (WCEN) members to respond to the current government consultation on barriers to community energy, which is open until 30th June. The responses to the consultation will provide a useful platform for the community energy sector to engage with a new government. There is a presentation on responding to the consultation from Dan Stone , the Policy and Influencing Officer at the Centre for Sustainable Energy, on the WCEN website under Meeting Notes 16th May.
